Wood, a global leader in consulting and engineering, has verified ADNOC Refining’s ability to produce Lower Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF). This achievement paves the way for ADNOC Refining’s future alignment with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) once the certification process is formally established.

As part of a comprehensive lifecycle assessment, Wood’s carbon advisory team evaluated the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions linked to ADNOC Refining’s jet fuel production. Utilizing its proprietary software, Wood analyzed over 25,000 unique data points, confirming that Ruwais Refinery has the potential to meet strict international certification standards, including the anticipated requirements of ICAO CORSIA and ISO 14067.

Azad Hessamodini, Executive President of Consulting at Wood, emphasized the complexity of classifying aviation fuel as lower carbon, stating:
“Our carbon specialists simplify this intricate process, allowing clients to bring their products to market more quickly while achieving their sustainability and growth objectives.

“Aviation remains one of the most challenging sectors to decarbonize. Accelerating the production, certification, and adoption of alternative fuels is crucial. Lower Carbon Aviation Fuel can reduce emissions by approximately 10%, providing an immediate solution amid increasing aviation activity while supporting the long-term economic feasibility of more advanced decarbonization strategies.”

Sultan Al Bigishi, CEO of ADNOC Refining, highlighted the significance of this achievement:
“With global aviation demand on the rise, advancing the production of lower carbon aviation fuel is essential for reducing emissions while ensuring a sustainable future for the industry. The confirmation of our ability to produce LCAF reinforces our commitment to developing lower-carbon solutions that contribute to aviation decarbonization and the continued sustainable growth of air travel.”

This validation marks another milestone in Wood’s ongoing growth in the Middle East, following a successful year in which the company secured $920 million in contracts across the region in 2024. Announced in conjunction with the Sustainable Aviation Futures MENA Congress, this achievement highlights the increasing momentum behind sustainable fuel development and the Middle East’s investment in advancing decarbonization pathways.
